What are 3D LED backlit signs?
3D LED backlit signs are fabricated with real dimensional depth, so the sign stands proud of the wall with a solid, sculptural body rather than reading as a flat panel. Each piece has its own light source and its own circuit, made as a hollow metal sign shell (called a channel in the U.S.), not a solid block. The face is laser cut, the returns are fabricated to your shape with the depth set to your design, and the two are laser welded together into one hollow piece; low-voltage LEDs sit inside and throw light backward, so a soft halo washes onto the wall. Unlit, the depth reads as bold, shadowed metal; lit, the form is traced on the wall in a soft halo. Depth is where these signs earn their presence, and it applies to letters, logos, emblems, and layered or stacked forms alike. How deep we go comes down to what can be fabricated as a lit piece that houses its own LEDs and stays rigid, so we take the depth as far as your design allows and keep your intent. The metal sign shells are 304 stainless steel by default, marine-grade 316 for coastal sites, and aluminum on large signs (on the Common path) to cut weight.

What we need for your custom project
- Design file
- A vector file works best, so the shape and depth read true. A high-resolution raster or an AI-generated flat image is enough for a quote. Skip software auto-tracing: it distorts the shape, so send the high-resolution artwork as it is.
- Property sign rules
- Before any design work starts, check the sign rules with your property, landlord, or property manager: the allowed size range, any finish or color requirements, light color temperature limits, and the required mounting method. If the property has written sign criteria, send them to us directly, and both the quote and the shop drawings will follow them.
- Sizes
- Set the overall height, width, and depth within the range your property allows, then size the sign to the viewing distance: as a rule of thumb, a sign reads clearly up to about 120 times the height of its smallest key element. Distance still sets the size: in a national shopper study, 90.9% agreed that sign letters must be large enough to read from a passing car (per BrandSpark)3.
- Wall
- Send a photo of the wall where the sign will hang. A 3D sign stands proud of the surface, so wall material and flatness affect the mounting and how the halo reflects (especially on the Common model); the photo helps us plan the fixings and advise on the light color temperature.
- Power
- Tell us the power available on site (AC or DC) and the voltage, so we can match the right Mean Well power supply.
- Indoor or outdoor
- Describe exactly where the sign will be installed: indoors, outdoors, or on a coastal site. For an outdoor sign in an extreme climate (high heat, heavy rain, cold, or dust), tell us before we lock the production details.
- Finish

Installation
- Hire a professional installer for the smoothest result: the job covers drilling the wall, setting stud bolts, routing wires, placing the power supply, and low-voltage wiring.
- We provide the 1:1 template, the wiring diagram, and the installation instructions, and because a 3D sign carries more depth and weight, the template and fixings keep the finished signage solid and aligned.
- The Common model must mount off the wall for the reflected halo to form; the Luxury model can sit flush or nearly flush.
Power supply
- The power supply usually sits behind the wall or above the ceiling, in a spot that sheds heat and stays accessible for service.
- For U.S. projects, we plan a 12V DC low-voltage system with a UL Listed Mean Well power supply before production.
Outdoor planning
- 304 stainless steel by default; marine-grade 316 for coastal or near-coast sites.
- For rainy regions we plan waterproof LEDs, drainage holes at the bottom of the metal sign shells, and edge detailing that keeps the halo outline clean.

- How deep can a 3D sign be, and what sets the depth?
- We set the depth to your design and to what the build needs: the metal sign shell has to house the LEDs, stay rigid, and let the halo form. So the depth is a design choice within those limits, and we confirm the exact depth in the shop drawings before production.
- Can you build layered or stacked 3D effects?
- Yes. We can stack or offset elements for a multi-layer, sculptural look, with the layering, spacing, and depth of each part drawn into the shop drawings for you to confirm.
- Does more depth change the halo?
- It can. Deeper returns push the light farther off the wall, which spreads and softens the halo, so we plan the depth, the off-wall distance, and the LED layout together for the look you want.
- Are 3D signs heavier, and how do they mount?
- More depth and body add weight, so for large pieces we build the metal sign shell in aluminum (on the Common path) to cut it down, and we mount to the wall with fixings sized to the sign. You get a 1:1 template and instructions to keep it solid and aligned.
- Can letters, logos, and custom shapes all be made 3D?
- Yes. Single letters, full words, icons, logos, and custom or layered shapes can all be fabricated with real depth. Where a detail is too fine to hold its form or the LEDs, we make the smallest change that keeps your design intent.
