As a professional sign maker, we build high-quality backlit channel letters, custom-made to your needs and lit by LED: safe, reliable, excellent on display, UL Listed, and covered by a 3-year limited warranty.
Once you approve the shop drawings, we start production. Production usually runs about 15 business days, and DHL door-to-door shipping then takes about a week, for a total of about 4 weeks from drawing approval to delivery.
What are backlit channel letters?
Backlit channel letters are hollow metal letters lit from behind. Each letter is built as a channel (the U.S. name for a hollow, fabricated metal letter shell) with its own LEDs and its own circuit, rather than cut from solid metal. The channel is open toward the wall, and that opening is closed with an opal acrylic back-panel that lets the light through. The LEDs shine through the back-panel onto the wall, where the light forms a halo in the shape of each letter, so the sign highlights your brand while staying elegant, lit or unlit, indoors or outdoors. The Luxury model mounts flush against the wall by default and can also mount off the wall, while the Common model always mounts off the wall. Whenever a sign mounts off the wall, we supply stainless steel tube spacers. The channels are made from 304 stainless steel by default, marine-grade 316 stainless steel for coastal or high-salt sites, and aluminum on large letters to reduce weight. Every set is built to your design, so it fits your needs. You may also hear them called reverse channel letters or halo-lit channel letters: the name goes back to the light-bulb era, when open-face marquee channel letters were turned around and mounted facing the wall, so the bulbs threw their light onto the wall as a halo. The reversed channel gave the letters their name, and LEDs have since taken the place of the bulbs. What we need for your custom project
- Design file
- A vector file is best. A high-resolution raster or an AI-generated flat image also works for a quote. Do not auto-trace a raster into a vector with software: much of the detail is lost, so send the high-resolution raster instead.
- Property sign rules
- Before any design work starts, check the sign rules with your landlord or property manager: the allowed size range, any finish or color requirements, light color temperature limits, and the required mounting method. If the property has written sign criteria, send them to us directly, and both the quote and the shop drawings will follow them.
- Sizes
- Stay within the sign size range your property allows. Readability sets the floor: in a national shopper study, 90.9% agreed that sign letters should be large enough to read from a passing car (per BrandSpark)3. If your sign serves as or includes address numbers, the U.S. model building and fire codes (IRC R319.1 for residential, IFC and IBC 505.1 for commercial) set a minimum for address numbers: a model-code floor of 4 in (102 mm) in height and a 1/2 in (13 mm) stroke width5. Some jurisdictions require larger, so always follow your local rules.
- Wall
- Send a photo of where the backlit channel letters will be installed, so we can plan the right mounting method and advise on the light color temperature. If the wall is curved, tell us: flat letters can mount off the wall on stainless steel tube spacers, or we build the letters to the curve of your wall so every letter keeps the same distance from it.
- Power
- By default, we use Mean Well power supplies. They accept 90 V to 264 V AC input. If the power available at your site is different or unusual, tell us before production, so we can match the right power supply for you.
- Indoor or outdoor
- Describe exactly where the sign will be installed, whether indoors, outdoors, or on a coastal site. For an outdoor sign in an extreme climate (high heat, heavy rain, cold, or dust), please tell us before we lock the production details.

- Another single color or a specific color temperature: tell us, and we set it up for you. Light colors are approximate and are not matched to color swatches.
Choosing your model: Luxury or Common
Backlit channel letters come in two models, Luxury and Common. The names only tell the two builds apart, not two grades of quality, and the difference is in how the halo forms. On the Luxury model the acrylic back-panel is partly exposed outside the metal channel, and the light leaves from that exposed edge straight onto the wall, so it mounts flush against the wall by default and gives a brighter, wider halo. This build first became popular in the flagship stores of luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, valued for its simple installation, strong display, and clean look with no visible mounting hardware, indoors and out, and businesses of every kind have adopted it since. On the Common model the back-panel sits fully inside the metal channel, the halo forms by reflection off the wall, and the letters must stand off the wall for that to happen. Installation
- Installation is arranged on your side: plan on a local sign installer or electrician (you can find one on Yelp or Google Maps). Professional installation gives the sign a longer life, a better look on the wall, and safer, more reliable wiring. The job covers drilling the wall, setting stud bolts, routing wires, placing the power supply, and low-voltage wiring.
- We supply a 1:1 mounting template, the wiring diagram, the installation instructions, and the mounting hardware, such as stud bolts and a Mean Well power supply.
- If the wall can’t take many holes, we can mount all the pieces on a metal backer box at the factory, so the sign goes up as one piece.
- The Luxury model mounts flush against the wall by default. The Common model must mount off the wall for the reflected halo to form, so we include stainless steel tube spacers, 13/16 in (20 mm) long by default, which also hide the studs and wiring. If you want a different off-wall distance, tell us in advance. When the Luxury model mounts off the wall, it uses the same stainless steel tube spacers.
Power supply
- The power supply usually sits behind the wall or above the ceiling.
- The Mean Well power supply needs a spot that can shed heat and stays accessible for service.
- For U.S. projects, we plan a 12V DC low-voltage system with a UL Listed power supply before production.
- Wire the sign exactly as shown on our wiring diagram, so each letter’s load matches its power supply. Never connect the sign to a supply that does not match the power supply’s input, and do not add, remove, or swap power supplies on your own: each set is matched to the measured load.
Outdoor planning
- 304 stainless steel by default. For coastal or high-salt sites, tell us, and we use marine-grade 316 stainless steel for the channels and the mounting hardware.
- Waterproof LEDs and drainage holes on every outdoor set, IP67 LEDs for rainy regions, and edge detailing to prevent light leaks.
Backlit channel letters FAQ notes
- How do I set the letter height?
- Within the sign size your property allows, start from the viewing distance. As a rule of thumb, a letter stays readable up to about 120 times its height (for example, a 1 in (25 mm) letter reads clearly from about 10 ft (3 m) away), though stroke width and ambient light matter too.
- How do I set the overall size?
- Within the size your property allows, and to keep a balanced look, we usually use the golden ratio or a half-width relationship, so the sign width is roughly 38.2%, 50%, or 61.8% of the wall width.
- Which fonts work well?
- Readable fonts with enough stroke width are the safe choice. Very thin, highly decorative, or tightly spaced fonts reduce readability and manufacturability.
- Can they be customized?
- Yes. We customize to your brand name, logo, brand colors, finish direction, light color, sizes, and installation conditions. Specific requirements for the channel thickness, the finish, or the fabrication process are welcome as well: tell us what you need, and we build to it.
- Can they go outdoors?
- Yes, but confirm climate exposure, wall conditions, waterproof LED planning, drainage, and material choice early.
- Why does the Common model have to stand off the wall?
- Its halo is reflected: light passes through the hidden back-panel onto the wall, and the wall bounces it back as a soft glow. Mounted flush, there is no room for that reflection, so the Common model always mounts off the wall. The Luxury model sends light straight from its exposed acrylic edge onto the wall, so it mounts flush by default, and it can also mount off the wall on stainless steel tube spacers.
- Does the wall color affect the halo?
- On the Common model, yes: lighter, smoother walls reflect more light and give a brighter halo. On the Luxury model the effect is small, because the light comes straight from the exposed acrylic rather than from the wall.
